Rainbow Rice

I made some RAINBOW RICE for the kiddo's today.
Since I have 2 boys though I just made GREEN and BLUE!
I did this by trial and error and when I found what really worked I decided I would share it here. I am a big fan of pictures so that you can SEE what's going on.
What you need: rice, food coloring, vinegar, paper towels, trash bags, fine strainer, plastic bowls, cups, straws or spoons, a big container.
Set-up: Put the trash bags flat on the table and on the floor to protect them from the food coloring. Lay down paper towels in long strips on the trash bags on the floor (this is for drying the rice). Set out plastic bowl and cup on trash bag on table. Have an extra paper towel handy for spills!
Side note: I'm not a fan of measuring things I just eye-ball it!
What you do:
step 1~ pour the vinegar in a cup
step 2~ add food coloring (you want the vinegar/food color mix to be concentrated)

step 3~ pour the rice in the bowl (I started with 2/3 cups, you can always add more later)

step 4~ add food color/ vinegar mix, stir to make sure rice is evenly coated

step 5~ add more rice if needed, stirring again to coat it evenly

This is what it should look like

let it set for 5-10 minutes

step 6~ after the color has soaked in you need to drain it (don't rinse it though or the color won't be as strong)

step 7~ remember those paper towel strips? Now you pour the rice onto them and spread it out evenly so it can dry.

once it's dried, 2-3 hours later, pick up the paper towel carefully and pour it into a big container

the finished product....the only downside to this is that it smells really bad!

I am going to be making eye-spy bottles out of some of this for a road trip we are taking this summer. I got the idea for that here. The rest of this is going to house different objects. The kids will have to try to find out what they are using only their hands.

Week Twenty- Four 6/6 - 6/12

6/12/10- We went to the Toy Story 3 party today. The boys had a lot of fun! They really liked getting their faces painted!
This is what Keegan did to keep himself busy during field day. He was such a good boy considering he had to watch everyone else have fun.
6/11/10- Today was field day at Triston's school. Here he is doing the obstacle course. He had a lot of fun!
6/10/10- Keegan and I went to the Playroom today. We met up with our friends from Monday and had a blast. We also met a few new friends. In this picture Keegan is playing with Maddi, his new girlfriend. It took him awhile to figure out that he had to hold onto the white thing instead of sending it down to the other side!
6/9/10- Triston was the "Star of the Week" this week. He got to tell his class about the pictures he brought in to share.
6/8/10- The boy's were playing Sorry Sliders today after Triston got home from school. It was so fun hearing them laughing together!
6/7/10- We met some new friends at the park today. Keegan had so much fun playing at the park and I had a nice time visiting with Kristie!
6/6/10- This is what helps me get through my work day. It also helps me stay warm since it is freezing where I work.

Thanks for stopping by, have a great week!

Week Twenty-Three 5/30 - 6/5

We didn't do a whole lot this week, just the normal everyday stuff.

6/5/10- Went to get groceries today. This is my trunk full of the sacks.
6/4/10-My new favorite bathroom cleaner. I got two tubs and a sink done in 10 minutes. I'm impressed! Side note, as I was using this, Keegan was telling me what they say in the commercial. It was so cute!
6/3/10- Keegan decided he wanted to suntan with me. What he doesn't realize is the sunscreen he has on prevents him from doing so.
6/2/10- We saw this very strange car today while we were out and about. Not something I would drive! (yes I am aware the date on this is wrong and I have fixed it)
6/1/10- The boy's snack containers for the summer. This way they won't be bugging me EVERYDAY about snacks, they can just get there own!
5/31/10- Our local Wal-mart. We go here at least 3 times a week, it's only three minutes away.
5/30/10- What a beautiful storm we had today. The rain was a welcome break from the sun!

Week Twenty-Two 5/23 - 5/29

5/29/10- Our wonderful boy Triston is all smiles today!
5/28/10- We went to The Cheesecake Factory today... it was delish!
5/27/10- The boy's and I got some cakelove today. The fruity one is Keegan's, Triston and I went for chocolate!
5/26/10- It's flip-flop time again. I got these and a few others for $1.50 each, I love a good bargain!
5/25/10- We went to The Container Store today. It would be very easy for me to spend a lot of money in this store! Luckily I did not!
5/24/10- Our silly Keegan wearing a hat that Triston made at school. I love his ears in this pic!
5/23/10- I got the idea for this project today for Keegan's room, and I didn't think it was going to take very long to do. Ian and I worked together and 3 days later it was done! I am thrilled with how it turned out and had a lot of fun doing this with Ian! We only got a little paint on each other ;)
Thanks for checking out my blog this week!
